An Easy Cooking Activity to Do With Kids at Home (That Builds Confidence, Not Stress)

Cooking with kids doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. Some of the best learning happens in small, everyday moments,  measuring, mixing, tasting, and trying again. When children are invited into the kitchen in a calm, supportive way, they build confidence, independence, and real-life skills.

This simple, hands-on activity is an easy way to cook together at home while letting kids take the lead.

The Activity: Build-Your-Own Flatbread

You’ll need:

  • Flatbread or naan
  • Tomato sauce or pesto
  • Cheese
  • Veggies or protein of choice

How kids can help:

  • Spreading sauce
  • Choosing toppings
  • Sprinkling cheese
  • Assembling their own flatbread

Bake until warm and bubbly.

Why This Works for Kids

  • Builds independence and decision-making
  • Encourages fine motor skills
  • Supports emotional regulation
  • Creates connection without screens

Let kids move at their own pace. There’s no “right” way.

This kind of hands-on cooking is exactly what we build on in our programs at Jardin Infantil Academy.

  • March Break Camp (March 16–20) offers daily cooking, creative exploration, and outdoor play.
  • After-School Culinary Classes give children a consistent space to build skills and confidence week over week.
