December is the perfect time to slow down, get cozy, and enjoy simple, meaningful activities with your little ones. Whether you’re looking for a quick craft, an easy recipe, or low-prep family fun, we’ve got you covered.
These activities build fine motor skills, spark creativity, and strengthen connections, all while giving kids a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Here are two simple ideas you can try at home this week!
Easy Holiday Craft: Nature Pinecone Ornaments
This low-cost craft uses items you likely already have — and it brings a little High Park magic indoors.
You’ll need:
- Clean pinecones (grab a few on a nature walk!)
- White paint or white glue
- Glitter (optional)
- String or ribbon
- Paintbrush
Steps:
- Brush light paint or glue onto the tips of the pinecone.
- Sprinkle glitter for a snowy effect (optional).
- Tie string around the top to create a loop.
- Hang on the tree or around the house!
Why parents love this:
It’s quick, mess-light, and encourages kids to explore textures, patterns, and nature — just like we do in our programs at High Park.
Easy 3-Ingredient Holiday Hot Chocolate (Kid-Made!)
This simple drink lets kids mix and measure safely.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups milk
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp maple syrup or sugar
Steps:
- Warm the milk.
- In a bowl, mix cocoa + syrup.
- Add warm milk and whisk until smooth.
- Optional: top with cinnamon or whipped cream.
Why it works:
Measuring, stirring, and tasting are beginner-friendly cooking skills that build confidence and independence, key parts of our Culinary Arts programs.
