Unplug and Play: 8 Fun Camp Games for Parents and Kids to Enjoy at Home

At Jardin Infantil Academy, we believe in the power of play to foster creativity, teamwork, and lasting memories. In today’s digital world, encouraging children to engage in unplugged activities that promote physical movement and social interaction is more important than ever. Inspired by our camp games, here are eight exciting activities that families can enjoy at home to bring the spirit of camp to their living rooms and backyards!

1. Capture the Flag

Capture the Flag is a thrilling game that can be played indoors or outdoors! Each team hides its flag (or any object) and strategizes to capture the opponent’s flag while avoiding being tagged. At our academy, we encourage kids to create and decorate their flags before the game begins, adding a personal touch to the fun. This game enhances teamwork, strategy, and problem-solving skills.

2. Nature Scavenger Hunt

A nature scavenger hunt is a great way to get kids exploring the outdoors. Create a list of items like a pinecone, a feather, a smooth stone, or a colorful flower. Set a timer and see who can find the most items within the time limit. This game encourages curiosity and appreciation for nature while promoting observational skills.

3. Octopus

Octopus is an active game where kids run across a play area while avoiding being tagged by the “Octopus” in the middle. Tagged players become “seaweed,” staying in place but reaching out to tag others. A fun variation we play at camp involves the Octopus calling out a specific group to cross, such as “Everyone wearing red!” before shouting “GO!” for the rest. This game promotes agility, quick thinking, and fun social interactions.

4. Jeopardy!

Turn learning into an exciting game with a kid-friendly version of Jeopardy! Create a board with categories like Animals, Space, or Fairy Tales, and assign point values to each question. Players take turns selecting a category and answering in the form of a question (e.g., “What is a dolphin?”). This interactive activity enhances knowledge retention and critical thinking skills in a fun, engaging way.

5. Wax Museum

Wax Museum is a game of stillness and concentration. One player, the “Curator,” walks around while the other players remain frozen as statues. When the Curator turns away, players can try to move slightly but must freeze immediately when spotted. A fun twist is allowing the Curator to make silly faces or jokes to try and make the statues laugh. This game helps children develop patience, balance, and focus.

6. DIY Obstacle Course

Transform your backyard into an obstacle course using household items like chairs, garden hoses, and cones. Players crawl, jump, and balance through the course while being timed. For an added challenge, try a blindfolded version where one player guides another through the course with verbal directions. At our academy, we encourage creativity in designing obstacle challenges, promoting problem-solving and coordination.

7. Mafia

Mafia is a fun social deduction game that encourages storytelling and strategic thinking. One player acts as the Moderator, while others take on roles like Mafia, Villagers, Guardian Angel, and Detective. During the “Night” phase, the Mafia secretly eliminates a player, while the Guardian Angel protects one person, and the Detective investigates a suspect. The “Day” phase involves discussing and voting on who might be the Mafia. This game builds teamwork, critical thinking, and communication skills.

8. Card Games

Card games are perfect for rainy days or quiet moments. Some favorites at Jardin Infantil Academy include:

  • Crazy 8s: Players try to match the number or suit of the top card, with eights being wild.
  • Pig: Players pass cards quickly, aiming to collect four of a kind. Once achieved, they discreetly place a finger on their nose—others must follow before the last player loses.
  • Golf: A strategy game where players swap high-value cards for lower ones to achieve the lowest score.

For an extra challenge, try building a house of cards and see who can create the tallest structure without it falling!

Happy Playing!

At Jardin Infantil Academy, we love bringing joy, learning, and active play into children’s lives. These simple, engaging camp games are a great way to foster creativity, teamwork, and lifelong memories. Gather your family, unplug from screens, and enjoy some classic camp fun at home!
