Kids Cooking Classes in Toronto: How Children Can Explore the World Through Food

Parents are always looking for activities that their children will enjoy — but the best programs offer something more than simply filling a few hours in the week.

Cooking is one activity that can bring together creativity, practical life skills, culture, independence and plenty of fun.

At Jardin Infantil Academy in Toronto, our Global Bites with Marta program gives children ages 4–12 an opportunity to explore the world through food. Each class combines hands-on cooking with geography, culture and multilingual learning to create an experience that goes far beyond following a recipe.

More Than a Kids Cooking Class

When children step into the kitchen, they’re doing much more than preparing something to eat.

They’re measuring ingredients, following directions, working with their hands, solving problems and seeing a project through from beginning to end.

At Global Bites, young chefs have opportunities to practice skills such as:

  • Measuring and mixing ingredients
  • Chopping and preparing foods safely
  • Kneading and rolling dough
  • Following multi-step recipes
  • Exploring new ingredients and flavours
  • Setting the table
  • Serving themselves
  • Working alongside other children
  • Sitting together and enjoying the food they’ve prepared

These everyday experiences can help children develop greater confidence and independence.

And there’s something pretty powerful about being able to say, “I made this!”

Travel the World Through Food 🌎

One of the things that makes Global Bites different from a traditional kids cooking class is the connection between food and the world around us.

Each week introduces young chefs to a different destination.

Children learn where it is located, explore elements of its culture and discover foods and culinary traditions associated with that part of the world.

Then they head into the kitchen.

For the fall Global Bites program, our culinary journey includes dishes inspired by countries and regions including India, Hungary, Mexico, Italy, Greece, Costa Rica, Panama, Thailand, El Salvador and the Middle East.

Children might make chicken flautas while learning about Mexico, explore Costa Rica while preparing gallo pinto, or discover Indian flavours while making samosas and cilantro chutney.

Food becomes the starting point for a much bigger conversation.

Geography Children Can See — and Taste

Geography can feel very different when it isn’t simply something being read from a book.

Where in the world is Thailand?

What foods are eaten in Hungary?

Where is El Salvador?

What ingredients and flavours are common in Greece?

By connecting a place on the map with the food children are preparing, geography becomes part of a hands-on experience.

It encourages curiosity about how other people live, eat and celebrate — and gives children an opportunity to discover both the differences and similarities between cultures.

Adding Language to the Experience

Multilingual learning is another element incorporated into experiences at Jardin Infantil Academy.

Children are introduced to words in languages such as Spanish and French, adding another opportunity to experience how people communicate around the world.

It isn’t about sitting down for a formal language lesson.

Instead, language becomes naturally connected to what children are already doing, discovering and talking about.

Building Confidence in the Kitchen

For adults, preparing a meal might feel ordinary.

For a child, it can be a major accomplishment.

Rolling their own dough, safely preparing an ingredient, assembling a dish or serving something they’ve made gives children tangible evidence of what they’re capable of doing.

Not everything has to be perfect, either.

Learning how to try, adjust, ask for help and keep going is part of the experience.

Over time, those small accomplishments can add up to greater confidence both inside and outside the kitchen.

Learning Around the Table

The learning doesn’t end when the cooking is finished.

Children also have opportunities to set the table, present their food, serve themselves, practice dining manners and sit together to enjoy the meal they’ve created.

These may seem like simple things, but they’re practical skills children can carry home with them.

Sharing a meal also gives the group a chance to slow down, connect and take pride in what they’ve accomplished together.
